Awards 2011
The 18th-century landscape of Hackfall, west of Ripon, has been awarded another accolade - the best project in Ripon Civic Society's Annual Awards - and the inspiration behind its rescue from neglect has been given a special award as well.
For the first time Ripon Civic Society’s Annual Awards, presented at a ceremony at the city’s Spa Hotel on THURSDAY 6 OCTOBER have recognised good design and craftsmanship from the area around the city as well as within the city’s boundaries.
To mark the change the Society has this year looked at projects over the last three years. Hackfall was awarded the Society’s Younge Rosebowl as the Best Environmental Improvement, and the Helen Whitehead Salver for the Best Project.

The John Whitehead Award was presented to the Rt Hon James Ramsden, whose vision and perseverance, through the formation of the Hackfall
Trust and an immense amount of hands-on work in the woodland, have transformed the Hackfall landscape from near-dereliction to its current state of good repair, without losing any of the magical quality it has always possessed.
The other big winners of the evening were village halls. Dishforth Village Hall, formerly Christ Church, won the Price Flagon for Best Restoration, and its internal doors, made by Dennis Harvey, were Highly Commended in
the craftsmanship category. North Stainley Village Hall was Highly Commended in the New Building category, and Samwaies Hall in Wath was Commended for its restoration.
The Best New Building category was won by houses
in St Mary’s Court, near North Stainley Village Hall, while the Gatehouse to Markenfield Hall won the Craftsmanship Award for its staircase, made by Mick Burniston, as well as being Highly Commended in the Best Restoration category, along with the new gallery and narthex at Ripon’s Holy Trinity Church.
The Sustainability Award was won by the National Trust’s How Hill Holiday Cottages on the Fountains Abbey Estate.

Awards 2010
The 2010 Ripon Civic Society Awards were presented at a ceremony in the Spa Hotel, Ripon, on Thursday 7 October. The guests included the Mayor of Ripon, Cllr David Elsy, and the Mayoress, and the award recipients.
