The Curzon Cinema in Ripon, which has transformed former commercial premises in the heart of the city, has been named as the best project in Ripon Civic Societyís Annual Awards.

The Societyís Awards, presented at a ceremony at the cityís Spa Hotel on THURSDAY 2 OCTOBER recognised good design, craftsmanship and environmental schemes from the area around the city as well as within the cityís boundaries.

The Curzon, with North Square Apartments as part of the development, was awarded the Societyís Helen Whitehead Salver for the Best Project. It was also joint winner, along with the transformation of the former Methodist Church in Grewelthope into the new Village Hall, of the Price Flagon for Best Restoration.

The Societyís Environment Award, with the Younge Rosebowl, was awarded to Littlethorpe Manor Gardens, developed over the last 14 years into a wonderful garden with formal and informal areas, and varying vistas opening at each turn.

Other Awards included The Taylor Plate for Best Shop Front, which was won by Boroughbridge Hardware for its sensitive adaptation of a former public house. The Craftsmanship Shield went to St Johnís Church in Sharow for its joinery work from the firm of Henki.

The John Whitehead Award, which allows the Civic Society to recognise an outstanding contribution to the area, was presented to the Ripon Walled Garden Project, in recognition of its work in the community, especially with people with learning difficulties and people on probation.

Other projects recognised in this yearís Awards were the new Music Building at Ripon Grammar School; the transformation of the ground floor of Ripon Town Hall for the Tourist Information Office and council drop-in centre; the shop front of Baroque salon in North Street; the repairs to the fountain in Boroughbridge; the carving of the Alice in Wonderland figures in Riponís Spa Gardens; and the sustainability of The Byre, a house at Studley Roger, and of flats and shops at 41-42 Kirkgate, Ripon.

David Winpenny, Chairman of Ripon Civic Society, says, ĎThis yearís Awards, our first for two years, show that great care is being taken to give some of the historic but sometimes-tired buildings in Ripon and the surrounding area a new lease of life by sensitive intervention, as at the Curzon cinema and Sharow Church. We should like to see the same care taken when new buildings are planned and executed; we still await a really imaginative new scheme to which we can give a new building award. We congratulate all our winners and we hope others will emulate the care, thought and craftsmanship that make them all worthy recipients of our Awards.í
