CIVIC SOCIETY WELCOMES NEW HARROGATE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
27th October 2008
The Annual General Meeting of Ripon Civic Society on Thursday 6 November will welcome the new Chief Executive of Harrogate Borough Council, Wallace Sampson, as its main speaker – and it will say farewell to its longest-serving Chairman, Mrs Dorothy Taylor.
Mr Sampson will speak to the meeting and answer questions from members at the meeting, which takes place in Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall, starting at 7.30 pm. This will be one of the first public meetings that he has addressed since he took up his new post.
Mrs Taylor will step down as Chairman of Ripon Civic Society at the meeting, after holding the position since 1995. During her chairmanship the Society has had many notable achievements, including its initiation of the refurbishment of the Market Square. Its work was recognised at the recent ‘Jewels of Ripon’ Awards, when Mrs Taylor received the Environmental Award on the Society’s behalf.
David Winpenny, Co-Chairman of Ripon Civic Society, says, ‘We are very pleased that Wallace Sampson has agreed to take time from his very busy schedule to come to speak at our AGM so soon after his appointment. The Civic Society is keen to play a constructive role, as it has always done, in protecting Ripon’s environment and encouraging good modern development; we look forward to working closely with Mr Sampson and his colleagues over the coming years.
‘At the same time, we shall be celebrating the long chairmanship of Dorothy Taylor, who has been – and whom I am sure will continue to be – one of Ripon’s greatest champions. She has been a remarkable and enthusiastic leader for the Society, and we are delighted that she was able to remain Chairman into our 40th anniversary year.’
